The 18th ASEAN and 8th ASEAN+3 Youth Cultural Forum (AYCF+3)
14th- 19th May 2023
ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum is one of ASEAN University Network (AUN)’s activities under the youth platform. It is deliberately planned to capture the essence of ASEAN cultural heritages, its influences and development, in order to promote better understanding and appreciation of the ASEANness. The forum provides a rich venue for the appreciation of the diversity and commonalities within the ASEAN+3 region through worthwhile dialogues of artistic and cultural experiences and expressions.
The 1st ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum was hosted by De La Salle University, the Philippines, in 2003 and has been held annually on a rotation basis in cooperation with AUN member universities as the hosts. In accordance with the ASEAN+3 Higher Education Policy Dialogue 2007, the Meeting agreed on to establish the ASEAN+3 University Network and agreed to strengthen student mobility through the expansion of various existing activities, including the AUN Educational Forum and Young Speakers Contest and the ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum. Subsequently, with regard to the extended areas of cooperation between ASEAN+3, the ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum is, thus, successfully developed to the ASEAN+3 Youth Cultural Forum. The inaugural year took place in Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, called the “11th ASEAN and 1st ASEAN+3 Youth Cultural Forum,” when it was the first time to invite delegates from China, Japan and Korea.
Theme: Think – Feel – Act: Revive Stronger!
The powerful driving force of ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum originates from two significant elements: art and culture. This year’s theme encapsulates how the processes of thinking, feeling, and acting could lead to art and cultural production. Art offers humans a beautiful and universal means of communication, whereas culture encourages moral behaviour and leads ways of life.
In recent years, the ASEAN communities have constantly been battling with the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the arts and cultures have been severely disrupted. The productions of art and culture were forced to change on an unprecedented scale. Dialogue spaces, which traditionally required physical space and audience attendance, must adapt to occupy virtual spaces. Thus, the processes of thinking, feeling, and acting must continue to preserve the pulse of life.
The past three years have proven that, among all the things that have been lost amidst the pandemic, creativity still persists. Inspiration still transcends physical boundaries as well as limitations of barriers and space, similar to the language of beauty communicated in art. Armed with the results of our learning and contemplation, we can rise and continue to grow and move better and stronger. This year’s theme invites participants to think, feel, act and revive stronger together. Hence, participants will ultimately be able to revisit and re-cherish the production of arts and culture from its evolution since the pandemic, as suggested by the framework that we must learn, think, feel, and act together.
